What's it like to be a Landscaper?
Landscapers design, plan and maintain gardens and parks. Landscapers make sure plants are growing well, weeds are controlled and hedges remain in good shape. They usually work for local councils, landscaping companies or for themselves as an independent contractor available for hire. Landscapers need a high degree of fitness to be able to carry out the work they do, which can be very physically demanding.
Tasks and duties
- Designing and constructing residential and commercial gardens and landscapes.
- Maintaining lawns, hedges and plant growth.
- Controlling and removing weeds.
- Rehabilitating urban bushland.
- Constructing recreational structures, such as childrens' swings or water features.
- Providing technical advice on proposals and development plans.

How to become a Landscaper
While you don't need formal qualifications to work as a Landscaper, undertaking a qualification to learn the theory behind plant and bush care may be an advantage.
- Consider undertaking a vocational qualification through TAFE or a registered training organisation, such as a Certificate II in Landscaping (AHC21616), a Certificate III in Landscape Construction (AHC30916), a Certificate IV in Permaculture (AHC42116) or a Diploma of Landscape Design (AHC50616).
- Alternatively, you may be able to undertake an apprenticeship in landscaping with an employer in your area.
- Gain practical experience and on-the-job training to develop the skills to become a landscaping contractor, or obtain employment with a landscaping company or local council.
